Terms of Service
Last updated · SnapVocab
Draft for review. This document has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer and will be finalised before launch.
These terms cover the SnapVocab app and this website. Using either means you accept them. They are written plainly on purpose.
The service
SnapVocab (SnapVocab) is a mobile app for learning GRE and SAT vocabulary: curated word lists, mnemonics, word roots, short stories, games and a spaced-repetition review schedule. We change and improve it continuously, and we may add, alter or withdraw features. If we withdraw something you paid for, see the subscriptions section.
We do not promise the service will always be available. It depends on our servers, your device and your network, and any of them can fail.
Your account
- You need an account, because your progress is stored on our servers rather than only on your phone.
- Give us accurate information, keep your password to yourself, and tell us at hello@snapvocabapp.com if you think someone else is using your account.
- One account per person. Do not share logins, and do not create accounts to get around a limit — for example, to collect the free tier twice or to inflate a league standing.
- You are responsible for what happens under your account.
Acceptable use
Do not use SnapVocab to:
- break the law, or help anyone else to;
- harass, threaten, impersonate or abuse another learner, including through a display name, a friend request or a duel;
- scrape, bulk-download, resell or redistribute our word lists, mnemonics, stories, root data or game content;
- reverse-engineer the app, attack our servers, or try to reach data that is not yours;
- automate play to win leagues, duels, streaks or badges dishonestly.
Anything you write
You can write your own mnemonics, edit a word's definition or examples for yourself, and import your own word lists. That content stays yours. Two conditions apply.
- It must be yours to post. Do not paste in someone else's copyrighted material — including the text of a paid prep book — and do not write anything obscene, hateful, harassing or that identifies another person.
- If you choose to share a mnemonic with other learners, you give us permission to store it, show it to them and let them vote on it, for as long as you leave it shared. You can delete it, and deleting your account removes it too.
We can remove content that breaks these rules, and we can suspend an account that keeps doing it.
Subscriptions
SnapVocab has a free tier and a paid tier called Pro. Paid plans are not on sale yet — nothing in the app can currently charge you. The paragraphs below describe how it will work once they launch, and we will update this page before they do.
- Pro will be sold as an auto-renewing subscription through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Those stores take the payment, hold your payment details and issue the receipt. We never see your card.
- Your subscription renews until you cancel it. You cancel it in your Apple or Google account settings, not with us — we cannot cancel it for you.
- Refunds are handled by the store you bought from, under that store's policy. We can rarely help directly, but write to us and we will point you the right way.
- Prices, plans and what Pro includes may change. A change will not alter a term you have already paid for.
What belongs to whom
The app, the website, and the content we made for them — our curated word lists and their definitions and examples, our mnemonics, our root explanations, our stories, our game levels, the SnapVocab name, the fox and the design — belong to us and are protected by copyright. You get a personal, non-transferable license to use them for your own study. You do not get the right to copy them out, republish them, or build a product on them.
The words themselves are nobody's property. The names of the prep lists we cross-referenced, and the names of the exams, belong to their owners.
SnapVocab is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by ETS, the College Board, or any prep-book publisher. GRE is a registered trademark of Educational Testing Service. SAT is a registered trademark of the College Board. We use those names only to say which exam a word list is for, which is a factual description of our product.
What we do not promise
SnapVocab is a study tool. It cannot and does not guarantee any exam score, any score improvement, or any admission outcome. What you get out of it depends on the work you put in, and no vocabulary app can change that.
We work hard on the accuracy of our definitions, examples and etymologies, but they are teaching material, not a dictionary of record, and they may contain mistakes. Tell us if you find one. Our AI features produce text from a language model, which can be confidently wrong — check anything that matters.
The service is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind to the extent the law allows.
Ending it
You can stop using SnapVocab whenever you like, and you can delete your account — see deleting your account. If you have a subscription, cancel it in the store as well; deleting an account does not cancel a store subscription.
We can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, that is being used to harm another learner, or that we are required to act on by law. Where it is fair to do so, we will warn you first and explain why.
Governing law
Placeholder. The governing law and the courts that will hear any dispute are not yet decided, because the contracting entity and its jurisdiction are not yet settled. This section will be completed before launch.
Changes to these terms
We will update the date at the top when these terms change. If a change is significant, we will tell account holders by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use SnapVocab after that means you accept the new terms.
